Meyerbeer coffee. I noticed the name and started laughing when I was at the top of Peterskirche. Named after the composer, but all I saw was the 'beer' part.
And a couple other leftover pictures from the Munich trip.Strange little things, they remind me of tomatillos (maybe since they're closely related). I've only had them once before ~ they left a few in our room each evening at the Hilton in Stockholm years ago. I saw them at the market yesterday and didn't get any, but then they were at the grocery store as well and I couldn't resist.
Or 'Little Oktoberfest.' It started on Friday and I wandered over yesterday to see what it was all about. I didn't realize that Oktoberfest had such a carnival atmosphere to it. I thought is was more just about the beer. There was one big beer tent, but the bulk of the place felt like a county fair, with games and rides and junk food.
I still like Lilia's version of this way better, but it was a fun thing to test out the continuous shooting mode on.
Because who doesn't need a good McBathroom now and then? This one is in the Hauptbanhof, and was getting quite a bit of traffic. I think I heard a news bit on these the other day...
In case you can't read it, the prices are:
- WC ~ € 1.10
- Pissoir ~ € 0.60
- Dusche ~ € 7.00
(A repeat, but with better pictures.) After the market, I headed to Andechser am Dom for lunch. I had the "Pellkartoffeln mit Andechser Kräuterquark und Lachstatar." Mmmm.
Since I'm missing the Artichoke Festival this week at the SF market, I decided to go back to the Viktualienmarkt and ogle all the food there again.
As expected, lots of asparagus.
Yellow aubergine ~ I've never seen such a thing. Sounds like an oxymoron to me. And while I'm at it, the jumbo shrimp. Oh, and Bill's brother, the monkfish, was back at the market.
Mmmm...I've had wild geflugel, it was delicious.
Does anyone know how you'd prepare this?
And while I'm sure these will disgust people, they kind of make me laugh, with their lolling tongues.
(Sorry, not much in the way of description or nice formatting, but I just wanted to get some pictures up.)
Sunday afternoon I wandered over to Schloss Nymphenburg.
Found some flowers (including wisteria, which I used to always think of as hysteria as a kid). It’s spargel season! A late lunch of asparagus salad in the gardens felt very civilized. Birds ~ they grow some big-ass swans there! And a couple others ~ a little black bird that looked like he was trying to play fetch, and a scratching goose. I wanted to get a “Vox is in da Sch-iz-loss!” picture since I was wearing my purple Vox shirt Sunday, but I couldn’t use a flash so nothing came out. Instead, I give you the only well lit things in the palace (other than the entryway), and the best I could do. (More beauties here.)
The rest of the Munich trip pictures are mostly meals.
This was a very porky meal, but it was really good, kind of a super tender pork pot roast (schweinbraten). Even the slaw had something bacony in it. I'm not sure if I was supposed to eat the fried skin and fat thing on the top. I know it sounds nasty, but holy crap was it ever good. Amazing.
Smoked salmon and spinach quiche with salad at Cafe Haidhausen. It was good. One night I had Thai. It was a little too salty and sweet. Maybe I'm just spoiled...
What I ate the day I went to the Viktualienmarkt. Cheese, meat, veg, bread. I realized while I am good at many aspects of traveling, after about a week I get sick of eating out at every single meal. The process, the time it takes, the decisions, not being able to have exactly what I want, all of it.
My last night, craving something light and simple and easy. Soup and salad. The potato soup was great.
And a final Doner Kebab at the airport. They had this cool thing to shave the stacks of meat that looked like a big electric razor, but I couldn't get a good picture of it.
