There's something new where Passage used to be. I like it better.
(And yes, that sign says the artist was born in 1911 and completed this giant metal piece in 2003. Hope I can do that at 92.)
I got to buy food at the market this week (along with flowers) since I'll be in town for at least a week. Woo hoo!
Green garlic, or THE Green Garlic as Knoll Organics markets it, is in season. Every week during this season they give out samples of green garlic cheese spread. Each week my friend and I try to act like this is something totally new to us as we get a sample from the tall guy who is there every week as well and clearly recognizes us. This week we both got some. They mix it with the Cowgirl Fromage Blanc, and I added a little coarse sea salt and black pepper as well. It is getting better as it ages. I had some pre-lunch yesterday, and with dinner tonight. It is a dangerous thing to be alone in a house with a loaf of Acme bread and a tub of this cheese...
Some strawberries and rhubarb.
And more Bear's Head, or Lion's Mane, mushrooms.
Today at the farmer's market there seemed to be a plethora of cuteness: cute boys, cute dogs (the sweetest catahoula/mastiff mix named Molly), but the absolute cutest ~ a two week old baby goat. Achadinha brought a goat with them for an earlier interview, and two kids were looking after it for the rest of the day. We hung out with them for a while. You can't really tell from the picture, but it was so freakin' soft.
I believe their tagline now ~ The Goat Makes It Good. It certainly does. I, of course, now want a baby goat.
Oh, and I got a pomelo. Or, really, I guess it is technically a grapefruit. I always think of the name as El Oso, but it is really Oro Blanco.
The Bay Bridge from the Embarcadero yesterday around 9am:
This weekend was all about nesting after being away all week. Unpacking, downloading pictures from the week (300+), cleaning receipts out of my wallet and backpack, opening a week's worth of mail, doing a week's worth of laundry, buying food, catching up with friends, picking up gobs of black fur, and consoling neurotic little cats.
These are (finally) the last of the pictures from the market Saturday.
Sometimes I buy what the people who have obviously have been sent from restaurants are buying (I was next to someone from Mecca Saturday). So that 's how I ended up with yuzu lemons. They're really seedy.
Other things that I bought this week ~ fava beans, citron (no idea what I'm going to do with it, I just swore I'd get some next time they had it because it's so cool looking), San Andres cheese, Pain de Mie from Acme, another pomegranate, mizuna, and the dry farmed early girls ~ excellent this week.
How many places have you lived in your life?
5.
Oh, I guess telling you where would be more interesting than just the number.
Born in Vermont because it was the closest hospital to my parents at the time; lived in New Hampshire the first 5 years (I use this as the reason for not having developed a Boston accent). Ayuh, no accent at all.
Years 5-18 in Boston suburbs, various places on the South Shore.
College years in dorms and crap-hole (is that one word or two?*) apartments around Medford and Somerville, MA.
3 years (and 4 different adresses) in New Orleans.
Moved to San Francisco the summer of 1998, and lived 3 different places here. I now *gasp* own a tiny shoebox of a place in SF, so no immediate plans to go anywhere else. (Oh, look at that ~ 2 years ago today I closed on my place, Sep 10th 2004.)
*Spelling of crap-hole determined by the Simpsons:
Professor: Describe your tavern in one word.
Moe: Uuhh, is crap hole one word?
Professor: Yes, if it's hyphenated.
Moe: Then I'll stick with crap-hole.
